Federal skilled worker: meeting the 67-point threshold

Canada operates an Express Entry program for skilled workers. It uses a 67-point grid to assess eligibility for federal economic immigration.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is a primary pathway to permanent residence in Canada. It operates under the Express Entry system. Meeting minimum eligibility is the first step toward receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

The 67-point evaluation

Applicants are assessed on a 100-point grid. You must score at least 67 points to qualify. Points are awarded across six factors: age, education, work experience, language ability, arranged employment, and adaptability.

Work experience requirements

You need at least one year of continuous, paid, full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience. This experience must fall within the last 10 years. It must be in an occupation classified under Canada's National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. The relevant categories are TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.

Language proficiency

Official language proficiency is critical. You must undergo approved language tests in English or French. A minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 7 is required in all four abilities: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This applies to both first and second official languages.

Common pitfalls

Many applicants miscalculate their points. A frequent error involves work experience: ensuring it is continuous, paid, and at the correct skill level. Another common issue is accurately converting foreign credential assessments. Language test scores are also frequently misunderstood, particularly the minimum CLB levels for each ability.

Achieving the 67-point threshold is essential for FSWP eligibility. Careful self-assessment against the Express Entry criteria will prevent common application errors. You must fully document each claim.
